The Great Seal of the United States has both an obverse and reverse side. The obverse side depicts a bald eagle holding 13 arrows in one talon and an olive branch in another. This represents the 13 colonies, as well as the fact that the United States desires peace, but is ready for war.
The Great Seal of the United States has a reverse side that depicts an unfinished pyramid with the Eye of Providence on top. It contains two Latin mottoes. One is “Novus Ordo Seclorum”, which means “A new order for the ages”. It also contains the motto “He approves our undertakings”.
It was first used in 1782. The design of the Great Seal of the United States was the result of a merger between two committees. One committee contained John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin.
