The Monaco flag was adopted on April 4th, 1881. It consists of a red horizontal bar on top of a white horizontal bar. The colors red and white were the heraldic colors of the House of Grimaldi. The proportion is either 4:5 or 2:3.
The previous flag, which is similar to the current state design, was a white flag that featured the coat of arms, albeit an older version. This Monaco flag was used before 1881, with the exception of the period where the principality was annexed to France.
The largest area of the country is Monte Carlo. The Monaco flag belongs to a country whose national motto is “With God’s help”.
