The Iraq flag has proportions 2:3. It was officially adopted on January 22nd, 2008. Since 1921, it has had five different versions. All versions have contained the fours colors of red, white, green, and black. Most have been tricolor flags made up of three horizontal bars of equal length.

The Iraq flag features the Takbir written in green Kufic font. There are many varying opinions about this new banner. Some do not think it should be in use while foreign troops occupy the country.

Alternative designs have been proposes. These Iraq flag banners include the color yellow, to represent the Iraqi people. A flag proposal in 2004 failed because it contained the color blue, which some felt was too close to that of Israel.
