The Guatemalan coat of arms is unique because it does not contain a shield, but rather a scroll flanked by olive branches. The scroll reads LIBERTAD 15 DE SEPTIEMBRE DE 1821 in red letters. This is the date of the nationís independence from Spain. Two bayonets (representing defense) and two swords (representing honor) are crossed behind the scroll. A bird known as the Resplendent Quetzal is located on top of the Guatemalan coat of arms. It is symbolic of liberty.
Jean-Baptiste Frene designed the Guatemalan coat of arms.
