The Alaska flag was designed in a contest won by Benny Benson. It was adopted in 1927. It features the north star and the big dipper on a blue background.

The blue in the Alaska flag was picked to represent the state's flower: the forget-me-not. Prior to the adoption of the Alaska flag, the US flag was used.
